More than 130 people joined us in March to celebrate the opening of the Northwest Kidney Centers Dialysis Museum at its new location in Burien. The museum displays the history of dialysis therapy, showcasing iconic photos and artifacts as well as dialysis machines and equipment used in the evolution of this life-sustaining therapy. Visitors also learn about Northwest Kidney Centers’ role in bringing this treatment to the world.
Delivering results for our patients, our people and our community
The vision to drive positive outcomes for our patients, our people and our community guided Northwest Kidney Centers this past year. I am incredibly proud of our collective focus and dedication to deliver equitable, innovative, and person-centered care to our patients; to invest in staff so they can stay, grow, and find fulfilling, mission-driven careers; and to meet the greatest needs of our community through our financial strength and community partnerships.
We helped open up pathways to transplant for undocumented patients, celebrated 117 patients receiving the ultimate gift of life and finished construction on our new-state-of-the art flagship clinic in the Yesler Terrace neighborhood that will serve over 400 home and in-center patients near downtown Seattle.
In our annual survey of physicians, 100% acknowledged the high standards of care we consistently deliver. This affirmation from our physician partners is a testament to the hard work, expertise, and compassion that each of our team members brings to their role.
Every day, I am grateful for this community who makes the work at Northwest Kidney Centers possible – the generous donors, the dedicated staff and the indispensable community partners. And to our patients, thank you for trusting us with your care. Let’s build on this momentum to continue breaking down barriers, forming new partnerships, and delivering the highest quality care to those who need it most.

President and CEO Rebecca Fox and Chief Medical Officer Matthew Rivara, MD, joined NKCA (Nonprofit Kidney Care Alliance) members in Washington, D.C., to advocate for kidney patients and nonprofit kidney care for NKCA’s Day on the Hill. They met with a number of legislators, including Rep. Larry Buschon (R-IN), co-chair of Congressional Kidney Caucus, to advocate for legislation that would provide Medicare reimbursement for concurrent hospice and kidney palliative care.

New pathways to transplant for patients

Thanks to a new waiver approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, undocumented patients are now eligible to get insurance through Washington state’s health exchange. Northwest Kidney Centers social workers supported patients currently on the Alien Emergency Medicaid (AEM) program transition to Apple Health, the state’s Medicaid program. This insurance coverage provides a pathway to transplant that wasn’t available before.

Community stewardship

Northwest Kidney Centers was built to serve the community, and true to our roots, we proudly supported our neighbors and partners around the region in 2024. This past year we continued our partnership with the Rainier Beach Access Coalition as greenspace stewards and volunteered with City Year Seattle at Denny International Middle School on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We also sponsored and participated in events like the Seattle Walk for PKD and the Seattle Pride Parade.

Increasing opportunities for everyone
At Northwest Kidney Centers, we’re working to increase opportunities for everyone – regardless of their race, ethnicity, or background – to receive the care that supports them living their healthiest life. We build people’s trust and confidence through our integrated and equitable approach to person-centered care, with an extraordinary team of compassionate care individuals.
We work to provide support, reduce disparities, and improve access to care for our patients, particularly those who are disproportionately affected by kidney disease and face significant barriers to health care due to their identity, status, or demographics.
Why Northwest Kidney Centers matters to me
“The dialysis techs at Northwest Kidney Centers have been nothing short of amazing! It’s a scary thing to go through dialysis, but all of the techs do a wonderful job to make it as easy as possible for us.”
– In-center dialysis patient Randy Yim and his wife, Ann
