Immunosuppressive bill included in House Health Care Reform PackageThe Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act (H.R. 1458/S. 565) was included in the House of Representatives health care reform bill, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962), which passed the House Nov. 7.Immunosuppressive drugs are vital for surviving a kidney transplant. Currently, Medicare only covers the cost of these drugs for 36 months if the transplant recipient is under age 65. The annual cost of these drugs is $15,000 to $20,000, which is far less than the cost of dialysis ($50,000 to $75,000 per patient, per year) or the cost of a second transplant ($100,000 to $125,000 per transplant). The Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patients Act (H.R. 1458/S. 565) will end the 36-month limit on Medicare coverage of vital drugs for kidney transplant recipients.
